Swiss Mountain Dog Art
Swiss Mountain Dogs are also known as "Sennenhunds", or "dogs of the Senn". The names Senn / Senner refer to herdsman and dairymen in the Swiss alpine regions. A sennelager is an alpine meadow. They may have arrived in this region in Roman times or before.
These dogs are medium to very large in size, with a heavy build, and they have a calm temperament. These working dogs had several tasks:
- general farm dogs
- herding dogs, herding cattle and sheep
- guard dogs, guarding people, homes, and livestock
- carting dogs, larger breeds can pull carts
There are four different breeds of Swiss Mountain Dogs. They differ in heights and weights, but they all have a distinctive tri-color coat (black, brown and white). These breeds are as follows:
- Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund)
- Bernese Mountain Dog (Berner Sennenhund)
- Appenzeller (Appenzeller Sennenhund)
- Entlebucher Mountain Dog (Entlebucher Sennenhund)
